Partnership 2000 is the Pittsburgh Jewish community's direct connection to the people of Israel.
Established throughout North America in 1995 by the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh's national organization United Jewish Communities and the Jewish Agency for Israel, Partnership 2000 has created dynamic relationships between people and communities throughout North America and those in Israel.
It's about building lasting connections between the two peoples linked by common history and joined by common interests. Pittsburgh has one of the most vibrant and rich Partnership 2000 programs in North America.
As one of the first communities to launch the effort, Pittsburgh and its sister city of Karmiel and Region of Misgav, both located in the upper Galilee in Northern Israel, has created a multitude of joint projects that have been successful to all three communities. Specifically, the projects have included developing connections among professionals in areas of social affairs, youth and teen growth and economic development.
Karmiel is the largest city, and urban and commercial center in the Galilee. Founded in 1964, Karmiel has a population close to 50,000. It is home of ORT Braude College and a Performing Arts Cultural Center. Each July, Karmiel hosts the International Folk Dancing Festival which presents dance groups from all over the world. This three day festival attracts thousands of visitors to Karmiel, both as spectators and as participants in the various different dance events.
The region of Misgav nestles amongst the hills of the western and central Galilee. The name for this area originated in an ancient book "The Wars of the Jews" by Yosef Ben Matitiahu (Josephus Flavius). The region covers an area of approximately 50,000 acres. Thirty-four villages are part of this region with a total population of 15,000 residents, including 4,500 Bedouin Arabs.
In 1982 the Misgav Regional Council was established in order to supply municipal services and to accelerate the development of the region. At the time the area was only lightly populated and a program was initiated to encourage new settlements in this region.
The living bridge of Partnership 2000 has thrived on the personal relationships and friendships which have developed during the decade of collaboration. By working together, Partnership 2000 has enhanced Jewish life and Jewish continuity, promoted tolerance and mutual understanding, and developed greater economic ties that have been mutually beneficial. The opportunities for involvement and connection is endless.
