The Maimonides Society of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh is an honorary society for Jewish physicians in the Greater Pittsburgh area that seeks to encourage and strengthen the sense of community among its members. The society provides programs that integrate educational, social and philanthropic opportunities that are of interest to the medical community.
Membership is open to any physician who contributes a minimum of $1,800 to the Annual Community Campaign. Events sponsored by the Maimonides Society are open to all Maimonides Society members and their guests.
Recent events have included a joint program with the Federation's technology group, Blue Knot Pittsburgh, that explored The Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation Education and Research (WISER). In addition, we co-hosted a breakfast program with the Federation's Cardozo Society featuring Dr. Cryil Wecht.
The Maimonides Society is named for perhaps the most famous Jewish physician of all time, Rabbi Moses ben Maimon. Maimonides, also known as Rambam, was born in Spain in 1135 and died in Egypt in 1204. Maimonides came from a long line of Jewish scholars, and by age 33, he was a renowned Jewish scholar in his own right. Maimonides' medical works included commentaries on the work of Hippocrates and Galen, and treatises on asthma, impotence, poisons and hemorrhoids. He also wrote an early version of the Physician's Desk Reference. As a scholar, Maimonides was the leading Talmudist of his time.
